GOVERNMENT GRANTS AND LOANS
Promotion of the Humanities_Challenge Grants

    PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
    To support educational and cultural institutions and organizations in order to increase their financial stability and to sustain or improve the quality of humanities programs, services, or resources. Normally, institutions requesting their first NEH challenge grant must raise at least three dollars in new donations from nonfederal sources to receive each Federal dollar. Institutions requesting subsequent challenge grants must raise at least four dollars for each Federal dollar.

    ELIGIBLE FUNCTIONAL CATEGORIES:
    1. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT;
    - Historical Preservation;
    2. CULTURAL AFFAIRS;
    - Promotion of the Humanities;
    3. EDUCATION;
    - Libraries and Technical Information Services;

    WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS PROGRAM:
    - State;
    - Local;
    - Public nonprofit institution/organization;
    - Other public institution/organization;
    - U.S. Territories;
    - Private non-profit institution/organization;
    - Artist/Humanist;

    WHO CAN APPLY:
    - State (includes District of Columbia, public institutions of higher education and hospitals);
    - Local (includes State-designated Indian Tribes, excludes institutions of higher education and hospitals);
    - Public non-profit institution/organization (includes institutions of higher education and hospitals);
    - Other public institution/organization;
    - U.S. Territories and possessions (includes institutions of higher education and hospitals);
    - Private non-profit institution/organization (includes institutions of higher education and hospitals);
